New Zealand elections

Wow, Helen Clark and the Labour party lost the election in New Zealand... Labour won fewer seats that I expected... The winds of change blow through New Zealand as well.

TOPS-10 and TOPS-20

The first big computer that I ever used was the DEC-10 running TOPS-10 at the University of Pittsburgh. Back then, we received student computer accounts only when we had a class that required an account. Fortunately, as a Comp Sci major, I had a class every term that needed a computer account, at least until I started working for the computer center.

I was a prolific user of the "SEND" command, which was instant messaging on the mainframe. I created friendships over "instant messaging" many years before instant messaging would take off in our culture.

Our TOPS-10 system was not connected to the ARPAnet (predecessor to the internet). Pitt's VMS and UNIX systems (introduced to replace the DEC-10s) were able to send and receive email, they were not initially connected to the internet. My first use of a machine connected to the internet was Carnegie Mellon University's TOPS-20 systems. I gained access to those after I became a staff member in Pitt's computer center. At the time, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon let computer center staff have accounts on each other's systems. So, my first introduction to the internet was on TOPS-20.

What makes this LJ entry unique, is I am actually writing and posting it from a machine running TOPS-20. PDP Planet runs both a TOPS-10 and TOPS-20 system where people can get accounts on (http://www.pdpplanet.com/). I have been playing around with both the TOPS-10 and TOPS-20 systems. It is kind of amazing how much I have remembered and how much I have forgotten...

Your Gas Service is to be TERMINATED!

It generally is not a good way to start your day when you walk out of your apartment building and find a shutoff notice for your gas

Gas Shutoff Notice
service. Ok, I guess the landlord is not paying the bill. The building across the street does not have a shutoff notice. Is the landlord not behind on the gas bill for that building?

I am surprised the bill was only about $400. While no one is using their furnace, I guess I thought that 16 apartments using hot water for showers, laundry, and whatever else would cost more, but I am not sure how far behind it is. The customer service office for the gas company was already closed when I had a chance to call.

Finally, with the economy and housing situation what it is, this is now the first time all of the apartments in the building have tenants. So now the landlord falls behind?

Guess I need to talk to some of the other residents better plugged into what is happening here and with the landlord...

speaker droopy

A couple of people asked me why I was not writing in my blog, so I guess I need to write something.

As an anglophile fascinated by westminster-style governments, there is no better year than this year. I have never been a big fan of the Labour Party, but I found it not possible to dislike Tony Blair. I even agreed with many of his policies.

Palace of Westminster
I thought he was treated pretty poorly by his party in the end, so I am taking great joy in watching the back stabbers get it right back at them. I now find myself going to my post office box hoping that the new issue of the Spectator (UK version) or Weekly Telegraph are there so I can read up on the latest tittle tattle from Westminster. There is only this much exciting tittle tattle because the Labour Party leadership is beyond incompetent in the ability to manage the ground crumbling beneath them.

Only a few short years ago, the Tories were left for dead. The Tories will go the way of the Libs. Forever a minority party, unable to ever gain leadership again. It is not surprising to me that the Conservatives are likely to be in the majority in the next parliament; what is surprising is how quickly their fortunes have turned around while at the same time the Labour Party has been making the highly improbable unbroken streak of bumbling mistakes.

Halfway around the world, we have New Zealand where elections are upcoming. In Prime Minister Helen Clark's case, I disagree with just about every position she has, but I love listening to her speak. She is a master of question time and of divisive political speech.

The "Beehive"
Of course, it is easy for me to be entertained, I am not impacted by her policies. In preparation for the NZ elections, I just today received my copy of Absolute Power: The Helen Clark Years by Ian Wishart. Unfortunately, my dose of political intrigue by magazine only comes monthly from New Zealand in Investigate magazine. But, it is well worth the wait.

I have cancelled all my U.S. based news and political magazines. They are all to boring in comparison to The Spectator and Investigate...

Unique airport announcement

Attention, the woman who was just in Victoria's Secret with the cat in her arms, please return to Victoria's Secret, you left your cat.

At first, I thought I must have misheard it, surely they said "cash", not "cat". But then they repeated the announcement and the woman next to me turned and said to me, "they really said 'cat', right?"

I forgot my blackberry on travel again. Guess I need a big sign on the inside of my door...

another day as a business traveller

United flight from Pittsburgh to Washington, DC departing at 4pm. We board and back from gate. We go to the part of the tarmac known as the jail. Ground stop in DC because of weather. In the USair plane next to mine in jail is my colleague flying to the other DC airport. We went through several 30 minute delays before we received an hour delay and headed back to the gate. The USair flight went back to the gate and cancelled. We went back and were allowed to get off for 20 minutes. Got off plane and reboarded 30 minutes later. Then they told us we all had to get off the plane so they could determine who was on the plane. Except they did not immediately reboard because we were delayed again. Passengers angry. Then we had to board because they needed our gate for another flight, so they started reboarding. Then they stopped because the inbound flight that needed our gate pulled into another gate. After another 30 minutes they resumed boarding because the ground stop was lifted. We boarded slowly and were pushed off the gate. We were too slow in boarding and missed window. Ground stop in place again. We go back to airport jail. Time on ground: 4 hours, 9 minutes and counting. Time to drive: 4 hours, 9 minutes. Made wrong choice today.

[Update: Arrived in DC at 10:06pm]

With all the talk of rising airline tickets, I was just able to book a flight in August between Pittsburgh and Chicago on United for $119. I do not think I have ever flown that cheaply on United before... Unexpected.

What is a latte

Heard in the Starbucks at the Somerset Service Plaza on the PA turnpike:

Man: I'd like the largest latte you have and, ah, I'd like a shot of expresso in it.
Clerk: Sir, the latte comes with two shots.
Man: Oh. Ok.

I cannot figure out what he thought a latte was. Warmed milk?
